The triplet $$$(a\\_{i-1}, a\\_i, a\\_{i+1})$$$ becomes $$$(a\\_{i-1}, a\\_{i-1} - a\\_i + a\\_{i+1}, a\\_{i+1})$$$. The optimal component is a single vertex, which mathematically corresponds to the **centroid** of the $$$M$$$ vertices. For any edge $$$e$$$ in the tree, let $$$m\\_{\\\\mathrm{in}}\\[e\\]$$$ and $$$m\\_{\\\\mathrm{out}}\\[e\\]$$$ be the number of color $$$c$$$ vertices on either side of the edge. The number of paths from color $$$c$$$ vertices that must cross edge $$$e$$$ to reach the centroid is exactly $$$w\\[e\\] = \\\\min(m\\_{\\\\mathrm{in}}\\[e\\], m\\_{\\\\mathrm{out}}\\[e\\])$$$.
